This guy has given you the most complex and unnecessary ways to downshift. I'm British and have been driving a manual for over 15 years. In normal driving your better of with either of the following methods. 1) In normal driving you downshift as you slow down. For example you drive through a 20 zone from a 60. Upon approaching the 20 zone you either use the break or allow the engine to break for you. Once your car starts to slow and the engine starts to reach low revs simply downshift smoothly. Keep doing this as you continue to slow down and use the appropriate gear for the speed. 2) if you want to downshift to get more power for example but don't want to slow down simply downshift and lift the clutch back up to the biting point, hold it there momentarily to allow the revs to raise, once they have risen and are starting to fall fully bring your foot of the clutch. Simple.

So when u heel toe ur holding the brake pedal with ur toe and pressing the gas with ur after switching gears right?(getting my first manual car so tryna learn some stuff any advice is appreciated)

I started driving stick when I was 17. There was a serious learning curve to downshifting, but once you get it down it is a game changer. It also helps a lot with your awareness.

I tried doing heel toe with my work boots on and it didn’t go very well 😂

That trick at 4:27 we use it here in Greece in motorcycles mainly, it'a an old trick from the 80's era, here we call it as ''dry rev-up''.

Is there any point in doing heel-toe in a non racing context? As opposed to holding the clutch at the biting point? I'll probably learn it just for fun but I can't really imagine any real benefit from doing it

So why do you double clutch? Why cant you just rev match going from 5th to 3rd or whatever?

I rev match in my automatic. Hear me out. It's a dodge and I cant afford to put it through unnecessary transmission stress, but I also cant afford brake pads, so I'll stick it in 2 or 1 and rev to the corresponding speeds before the clutch packs engage to save them from wear and tear.

When Im driving in traffic in 4th gear doing 35 when distance from a traffic light but approaching a red I would let my car slow to at least 25 to 30 then downshift smoothly into 3rd then let it slow to at least 20 then smoothly downshift into 2nd

When you're instructing in a car that has synchronized gears is not real and not helpful.

I am lost, wouldn't double clutch be the same as just leave the clutch pressed so the car stays neutral the whole time?

I watched this video about a year ago, was new to manual, my dad taught me how to move the car and such but he never taught me about downshifts he said just put it in N. For me i didnt think it was right and seems the car didnt like it so I stumbled upon this video, I had to be self taught (in a way) it was about my fifth day driving manual and I was doing heel-toes from 5>4>3>2 I remember doing it for the first time and how my car just felt alive, that is when I knew that I was connected with my car. Ever since then I would say that I am pretty much a master in driving manual, I always drive in mixture of all styles, my favourite being double clutching, it was the first technique i learned, i also double clutch heel toes and rev match, I know it isnt a thing anymore but it feels good and i can do as fast doing it normally without double clutching, mind you i still do normal granny shift/heel toes, i just incorporated double clutch in those techniques sometimes i dont. It was also funny explaining to my dad about rev matching his mind was blown at the same impress at me that i could do all of these techniques in a short period of time. Anyways I came back a year later or so, thanks for the video man! if your curious i drive a toyota celica 2003 trd edition, sucks it is fwd but its fun car, looking to get a rwd to properly do drifting.

The big problem with this is it depends entirely on how your car is laid out. 7th gen VWs are notoriously bad with this. The gas is too low to allow me to do this. The only way double clutching works for me is to VERY quickly jump from say 5th down to 2nd because I have to brake hard for a right turn. That's the only benefit I get out of double clutching. The problem is that I have to ride the brake with the toes and blip the gas with the heel. This is impossible with my VW because the idiots decided to set the gas two inches deeper into the foot well than the brake! Makes no sense at all. I could do this with my previous car because all the pedals were perfectly lined up. I've tried over and over with my VW but it's impossible. You'd need size 10 feet to be able to do it. The gas is simply too deeply recessed into the footwell to reach. This is what I could do with the MINI: the speed limit is about 50 but my turn is coming up in less than 800 feet and I'm already in 6th gear. I hold the brake with my toes and clutch in. Go to neutral. With the brake still slowing the car down, I reach with my heel and blip the gas to about 3-3500 rpm then drop to 2nd and let the clutch out. I can't do it with my current car simply because the pedals are so misaligned. It makes no sense that most car brands do not allow you to manually adjust the pedals. Not all of us have size 10 feet or legs longer than Linda Evangelista!
